Orientation camp

To help students transition smoothly into university life, many Czech universities offer orientation camps tailored specifically for newly accepted students. These camps aim to familiarize students with campus life and academic expectations. Most importantly, they are the perfect opportunity to meet and get to know fellow students.

Orientation camps (in Czech “Seznamovací kurz”) at Czech universities usually last a couple of days. Most of the time, they take place in some type of campsite or a nature resort. So be prepared that sleeping in a tent is a possibility. Campsites in the Czech Republic are usually well-equipped with shared kitchens, toilets, and showers. Some even have playgrounds, small shops, or sports courts.

Popular destinations for camping in the Czech Republic include Lipno Lake in South Bohemia, the Orlík Reservoir, or the Krkonoše Mountains.

Some camps may be organised by the universities themselves, but usually they are planned by student sororities. Because of this, orientation camps differ from orientation days which take place on campus. Orientation camps are rather like days long social gatherings – not dissimilar to summer camps.

They typically include various activities, such as workshops, campfires, or even sports that encourage students to mingle and form friendships. The participants of an orientation camp usually arrive by bus, train, or car, bringing tents, or staying in small wooden cabins called „chatky“.

Mornings often begin with a simple breakfast consisting of fresh bread or a typical Czech “rohlík”, ham, cheese or pathé, and tea or coffee. During the day – depending on the weather – students can go swimming, hiking, cycling, or take boat trips.

Evenings are usually spent around a campfire or grill. Roasting sausages (“špekáčky”) on sticks is a beloved Czech tradition. People sing songs, play guitar, and enjoy beer or wine under the starry sky.

Making connections early on can significantly enhance your university experience and make you feel less isolated and more motivated to succeed during your studies. That is why orientation camps are definitely something you should consider investing in. The price is usually a few thousand Czech crowns – way lower than if you would decide to go camping on your own.

Some camps might even be attended by your future teachers. It’s a great way to meet them in an informal setting. Older students can share first hand experiences that can inspire you to make the most of your university years and also tips which you will probably not find anywhere else.
