Twelve types of students you’ll meet at university

types of students

Every student is different. But even at university you will meet certain specific types of people – just as in any other student body. And what is more – you may very well fall into one of the following categories yourself.

The Activist

Always fighting for something: justice, love, world peace… or just for the school to finally fix those broken toilets. He’s articulate and unafraid of confrontation. However, he can be a little intense at times.

The Slacker

Most slackers do the bare minimum that is necessary to get through to the next semester. It’s therefore surprising when you meet them at the final exam – probably for the first time ever. They also usually seem more tired than the rest of the student body.

The Dedicated Student

The heart of a dedicated student beats only for school. He won’t miss a single lecture, even if he has to crawl to school on all fours. However, you will rarely see him at social events, such as student parties.

The Nerd

The nerd is not only the top of every class, but he also wants all his teachers to adore him. In other words, he is a teacher’s pet. Just like Hujer, from the famous Czech film Marecek, Pass Me the Pen!, who brought his professor plums from his garden. He wants to be the center of attention and always appears to be the cleverest.

The I-don’t-need-school Student

Some people go to university because they feel they must, most often because their families expect them to. These types of students either don’t graduate or they make it till the end, but don’t end up working in their field of study.

The Stranger

This type of student skips as many classes as he can. Most often simply because he doesn’t want to go unless he absolutely has to. You’ll probably meet him at the final exam for the very first time and wonder where he came from.

The Latecomer

This student does come to class, but he’s always late. While he clearly never grasped the concept of punctuality, he has a knack for coming up with creative excuses. Such as „my bus got hit by an avalanche“ or „my dog ate both my shoes“. He also seems to have more grandparents than your average person, who keep on dying at regular intervals and then come back to life, only to die again at the most suitable moment.

The Athlete

Athletes, especially star athletes, tend to be few at Czech universities, but they usually stand out from the crowd. This is because they manage to juggle both professional sports and their studies. They often have an individual study plan due to their busy sports schedule. Ordinary mortals rarely get to see them. Sorry, other students.

The Prankster

The class prankster has a unique talent for sprinkling a bit of humor into any situation. He isn’t necessarily a bad student – in fact, class pranksters can be some of the smartest people in the room because making people laugh is not an easy task. He uses humor to lighten a tense atmosphere, to make friends, or simply to be the center of attention.

The Artist

The artists can study a variety of classes: from medicine to IT. What characterizes him is his creativity. He is not too keen on mundane everyday tasks. He would rather be floating in the clouds somewhere.

The Party Animal

A student who spends his nights at parties, in clubs, bars…simply speaking, you’ll definitely not find him at home after the sun goes down. Somehow, he still manages to get to class on time the next day. He enjoys his university years to the fullest, which may or may not hurt his grades. And if there’s no decent party going on, he’ll throw one himself.

The Loner

Unlike the party animal, you may not even notice this student. He usually keeps to himself. He attends classes but is very quiet and doesn’t talk much to other students. The reason might be the fact that he is shy, doesn’t want to talk to anyone, or is simply too preoccupied with things going on in his own head.
