First Exam Period in Czechia

When Eric, an international student at Charles University, started his first semester in Czechia, he quickly realised that the exam period here works a little differently from what he was used to. If you’re about to begin your first semester in Czechia, there are some things that might surprise you too.

Each country has a different exam period system and rules. The Czech Republic is no exception. What should you remember before your first exam period in Czechia?

In this article, you’ll learn:

  • how long the exam period in Czechia can last,
  • why choosing exam dates is important,
  • why the best exam slots disappear fast,
  • what to expect from oral exams,
  • why one failed exam does not mean the end,
  • how points during the semester can affect your final result.

It can last for weeks

Each semester at university finishes with the exam period. It can last up to two months. It’s mostly up to you how you spread out your exams. You’re the one picking the exam date from several options.

Based on how much time you have between exams, it can either give you the opportunity to get ready for each exam… or leave you stressed, feeling like you don’t have enough time to study. So, choose the dates wisely!

The best slots vanish fast

Of course, you’re not the only one picking your exam dates. At most Czech universities, students use the university’s online system to sign up for exams.

Popular slots can be gone in just several minutes. It’s best to follow the updates and not hesitate, or else you might end up with a bad date or a professor who isn’t as kind to students as other examiners.

If you want to make sure you don’t miss out on the best slots, set up a notification or alert system.

Oral exams are much more common than many students think

Many subjects in Czechia end with an oral exam. In some specific study fields, oral exams are prevalent and make up the majority of exams.

If that’s your case as well, remember: it’s not just about answering correctly, but also about being able to explain the links between various topics. It’s not enough to know definitions. You need to understand how things are connected in your chosen field.

One failure isn’t the end

In Czechia, even if you fail an exam, it’s not the end. A student usually has 2–3 chances to pass the subject. So, if you get an F during the first attempt, you can pick another exam slot and try again.

Each university can have different rules, so take the time to find out how it works at yours.

It’s not just about the final exam

Studying at Czech universities isn’t just about acing the final exam. You can collect points during the semester by:

  • doing well in smaller preliminary tests,
  • writing your essays or term papers and submitting them on time,
  • preparing oral presentations for classes,
  • being active during lessons.

This is something Eric says he wishes he had paid more attention to from the very beginning. In many subjects, the final exam matters, but your work during the semester can make a big difference too.
