QS Rankings by Subject 2026

The new QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026 is out, once again reminding us that when choosing a university, it is not enough to look only at the institution’s overall name or reputation. What is often much more important is the field or subject area in which the university is truly strong. That is exactly what this ranking focuses on: it does not compare universities only as a whole, but evaluates them according to individual disciplines and five broad areas of study. This year’s edition, according to QS, assesses more than 21,000 academic programs at around 1,900 institutions in 100 countries and includes 55 individual subjects.

In this article, you will learn:

  • why the QS subject rankings are so useful for applicants,
  • which Czech university has the strongest representation across subject areas,
  • what an overview of Czech universities by number of subject appearances looks like,
  • and which global universities placed in the top three in each area.

It is not about one “best university.” What matters is the specific subject area

The QS World University Rankings by Subject is one of the most closely watched international rankings precisely because it offers a more detailed view than general overall university rankings. For applicants, this is often more useful: one university may be the right choice for technical subjects, another for medicine, and another for humanities or social sciences. QS works with five main broad areas: Arts & Humanities, Engineering & Technology, Life Sciences & Medicine, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences & Management.

Charles University has the broadest representation among Czech universities

When we look at Czech universities according to how many of the five main subject areas they appear in, Charles University comes out as the most broadly represented. It appears in all five main areas, across a wide range of subjects, making it the Czech university with the broadest reach in this year’s QS subject rankings.

However, this does not mean that the map of successful Czech universities is about only one institution. On the contrary, it shows that alongside Charles University, other Czech universities also hold a solid place in international comparison — some thanks to their breadth, others thanks to their clearly defined specialization.

Overview of Czech universities by number of subject appearances

Based on publicly available QS data, we prepared a simple ranking of Czech universities according to the number of subjects in which they appear:

1️⃣ Charles University

2️⃣ Masaryk University

3️⃣ Czech Technical University in Prague and Brno University of Technology

4️⃣ Palacký University Olomouc

5️⃣ Czech University of Life Sciences Prague

6️⃣ Prague University of Economics and Business

7️⃣ University of Chemistry and Technology, Prague

8️⃣ VSB – Technical University of Ostrava

9️⃣ Academy of Performing Arts in Prague

🔟 Mendel University in Brno, Tomas Bata University in Zlín, University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice, Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague, and Academy of Fine Arts in Prague

What does this show?

This kind of comparison does not say that one university is automatically “better” than all the others in every respect. Rather, it highlights the difference between universities that have a broad reach across multiple areas and those that are strong primarily in a narrower range of disciplines.

In this year’s ranking, Charles University confirms the strongest representation across subject areas. Masaryk University follows closely behind, demonstrating very solid breadth across disciplines. Czech Technical University in Prague and Brno University of Technology confirm the importance of Czech technical universities in international comparison, while the Prague University of Economics and Business and the Czech University of Life Sciences Prague stand out especially in areas that match their academic focus.

That is exactly what makes the QS subject rankings so interesting: they help us view universities more realistically. Not only according to the prestige of their name, but also according to the areas in which they truly hold a strong position.

Life Sciences & Medicine

  1. Harvard University

Why is this ranking useful for applicants too?

Because when choosing a university, the most important thing may not be which institution is the most famous overall, but which one is strongest in the field a person actually wants to study. In this respect, the QS World University Rankings by Subject offers much more specific guidance than general rankings. Instead of one simple answer, it provides a broader map of the strengths of individual institutions.

And in the Czech context, this year’s results are particularly interesting because, alongside the traditionally strong universities, they also reveal the difference between schools with a broad academic reach and those that stand out mainly in their specialization. So if someone is choosing a university, it makes sense not to look only at the university’s name, but also at the area in which it is truly visible.
